Questions covered in this interview include:

  • What common mistakes are putting businesses at a significantly greater risk of a cyberattack?
  • Why are so many small businesses being targeted by ransomware gangs and what can you do about it?
  • How can companies prepare today for a possible cyberattack tomorrow?

The cybersecurity landscape is constantly changing with new threats emerging each week. Studies report that 60% of small businesses that are victims of a cyberattack go out of business within six months. For small businesses and public agencies without sufficient IT or cybersecurity staff, it’s difficult to keep up with evolving threats. Many feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of potential vulnerabilities they need to address, and understanding the technologies available on the market to address them.

Miron explained, “It doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive to get started on the right foot. Begin with a cybersecurity assessment, so you are aware of the risks you’re facing and how your current practices stack up against industry standards.” Identifying your gaps and vulnerabilities is an important first step. Understanding the real cost to your business of an IT incident or disruption is another.

According to Miron, “Those impacts include direct out of pocket costs for IT repairs, public relations, and legal fees, in addition to intangible costs that are harder to quantify. And that doesn’t include other more devastating and long-term impacts from lost revenue, business disruption, and erosion of trust in the company’s brand.”

When forming a cybersecurity plan Miron says, “Small businesses don’t have the budget to buy every tool or lockdown every single possible entry point for an attacker. It’s just not practical. By understanding the likelihood and impact of a breach or hacking event, any business can make smarter and more targeted investments to focus their funds on what is most important.”

“Cybersecurity doesn’t need to be daunting,” says Miron. “When you work with experts and have a comprehensive plan, you not only increase security, but you gain peace of mind knowing you’ve done everything you can to protect yourself, your customers, and your business.”
